Holocaust Memorial Day
"Memory is the only vaccine against indifference." - Liliana Segre.
This post is dedicated to Liliana Segre, a Holocaust survivor, a life senator of the Italian republic and the former President of its Senate. Segre, who had lost her mother when she was only one year old, was deported to Auschwitz at the age of 13. Once there, she was separated from her father Alberto, whom she would never see again, and who would be killed a few months later. Her paternal grandparents were also arrested and deported to Auschwitz after a few weeks, where they were murdered in a gas chamber on their arrival.
In 2019, at the age of 89, after receiving as many as 200 threats a day from far-right fanatics, Segre was placed under police protection. Earlier this week, during a press conference, she stated: "In a few years, the Holocaust will be one line in the history books, and then not even that anymore".
